Furlough fraud: fierce public backlash for those abusing the scheme?
HM Revenue and Customs has estimated that 5-10% of furlough payments have been wrongly awarded.
According to Head of White Collar Crime, Iskander Fernandez, fraudulent activity can have a hugely damaging “reputational and financial impact” on any business or individual that has been accused. “Whilst we are yet to see the first furlough fraud conviction, the first arrest having only been made in July, there may be fierce public backlash for any company or individual found to have fraudulently abused the scheme, particularly given the impact that the pandemic and the resultant lockdown has had to many of our personal and professional lives,” Fernandez explained.
